On a very cold February evening the GB Vets team had
high hopes of repeating their win of last year. The
Escorts fielded the identical team to 2017 whilst the GB
Vets had three ‘new comers’.
The scoring system adopted was to be agreed by the
players. So we had 4 matches PARS to 11, 1 PARS to 15
and 1 hand in hand out to 9.
First on was Paramjit Deol at No.3, replacing an ill
Ash Chakraborty and Nigel Belle at No.6. Paramjit
recorded a 3/1 win over the Finchley Manor Manager,
whilst Nigel succumbed easily to last year’s No.3.
Ron Walker at No.5 lost a hard fought battle and
Chris Goodbourn at No.2, with expectations of an
emphatic win, regrettably recorded an emphatic loss!
Andy Bonner at No.4 faced an eager 2018 Nationals O55
finalist, Jill Campion. Although Andy took the first
game, Jill was always pushing forward whilst Andy was
never able to control from the front. He lost 1/3.
It was left to Nick Dart at No.1 to make our overall
result respectable. This he did in fine style with a 3/1
win.
So a win for the Escorts by 4 matches to 2.
Our thanks to the Escorts non-playing captain Berge
Kay and Rick Prior of Finchley Manor for a most
enjoyable evening which was rounded off with an
excellent meal with much liquid refreshment and jovial
banter.
