16th April 2018
Following a 5/0 defeat last year the GB Vets were
certainly not in the mood for a repeat so decided to
field a much stronger team consisting of 4 National or
World title holders ranging from Over 40 to Over 65. All
matches were played PARS to 11 deserting the traditional
HiHo method of scoring.
First on was Robert Smith at No.5,
nursing a dodgy knee, his opponent flying in that day
from Hong Kong – what dedication from the RAC player! A
see-saw match, 2 all, but Robert struggled and lost in
the fifth.
John Goodrich our No.2 and National
O65 Champion also had a see-saw match but also lost in
the fifth. Not a promising start.
Next up 2 World class lady players – Mandy
Akin and Karen Hume. Surely
they could square the match? But regrettably no! Mandy
lost a hard fought, tight match 3/1 and Karen lost 3/0
although the score line masked the fact that there were
only half a dozen points in it.
So it was left to O40’s National & European Champion,
Keeley Johnson, at No.1 to save a
whitewash. This she did in style. A superb, high quality
game and although she lost the first 12/14 she powered
her way to a 3/1 win.
So a 4/1 win to the RAC.
With grateful thanks to the RAC and James
Gardner in particular, for hosting a great
evening of squash which was followed by the legendary
buffet dinner.
