This fixture is a firm favourite in the GB Vets calendar and is always such a joy to play at one of the finest and most prestigious clubs in the world.

This year we played PARS to 11 for the singles and to 15 for the doubles.

Mick Murray at No. 4 was up first and enjoyed a relatively easy 3/0 win as did Ash Chakraborty at No. 3 who, who although went to sleep in the second, won the other games with ease.

Peter Culver at No.1 found his opponent rather awkward and a very hard hitter of the ball. In retrospect a marker would have been helpful but although at 1/1 he was in with a chance he lost in 4 to the better player.

Glad to play someone nearer his age this year (last year he played a youngster half his age!) Steve Jackson at No.2 ran out a 3/0 winner against the Hurlingham captain.

The match of the evening was the doubles with a repeat performance of last year by Derek Wright and John Prestwich. All games played on their doubles court, were hard fought and most enjoyable – 0/1, 1/1, 1/2, 2/2 – and the final game going to the GB Vets 15/14! A colossal effort by all 4 players and Derek unfortunately coming off court with what looked like a rather nasty looking leg injury.

So a 4/1 win for the GB Vets.

We were sorry for the absence of GB Vets captain, Philip Courtenay-Luck, who has just undergone shoulder surgery. All best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. A few words of thanks by acting captain Ash Chakraborty to Matthew Eltringham and the Hurlingham club for a superb evening of squash, food, drink and jovial hospitality. We look forward to next year’s encounter!
