In-between some leafy, beautiful Surrey houses lies the Dorking Lawn Tennis & Squash Club where the GB Vets have battled annually at least since 2010 – some 16 years.

The Club is a delight and I have had the honour and pleasure of being Match Manager for all those years. Always competitive fun, much camaraderie, friendly banter mixed with lashings of good food and drink!
I have now handed over to the very safe and capable hands of Derek Wright, who, I’m sure, will carry on for many years running this very popular fixture – a firm favourite in the GB Vets squash calendar.

And so to the results of this latest encounter:

With a combined age of almost 160 years, Derek Wright and Nigel Belle were on first to take on the younger aged Dorking pair. A highly enjoyable, see-saw match saw the hosts eventually win a thrilling match 3/1.
On the other court, an O75 champion Bryan Francis at No.2 took on the Dorking captain. At 1/1 the fight was on but his opponent’s consistency eventually won the day 3/1.
John Prestwich at No.3 always found himself on the back foot, couldn’t get into his normal fluid stride and succumbed after a brave fight 3/0.
So at 3/0 down it was up to No.1 Kevin Connors to save the day, which he did in fine style and after a slight lapse in concentration in the second game came through a worthy winner 3/0.
Unfortunately Steve Jackson was due to play but pulled out due to illness – we wish him a speedy recovery.
So a Dorking win 3/1

It was good to see Harriet Gray (Bob’s wife) supporting and after a few words of thanks from both captains ended a very pleasant evening.
